About the Filmmaker
Ricardo J. Varona is an award-winning Puerto Rican writer and director based in NYC.
His most recent work, 'La mujer de Héctor', has played in Academy Award Qualifying Festivals including Palm Springs International Shortfest, Nashville Film Festival, and Urbanworld, and has received a Best Short Film award from the New Faces New Voices Film Festival and an Honorable Mention in the Best Student Short category at the Woodstock Film Festival. It was selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick, and received the Warner Media One Fifty Award at the Miami Film Festival.
Varona holds an MFA from Columbia University where he was a Milos Forman Directing Fellow. With strong roots in Puerto Rico, Varona has shot several short films on the island. His stories are intimate portraits of fraught families, sexual experiences that often border on the transgressive, and coming of age.
