About the Filmmaker

Island-born and California-raised, Kayla is a filmmaker in Austin, Texas, dreaming up stories rooted in nostalgia, girlhood, and romance. Her short film, Joan on the Phone, premiered at SXSW in 2016, and her editing works have been official selections at SXSW, Austin Film Festival, and Florida Film Festival. She’s currently developing a coming-of- age narrative feature and proof-of-concept short exploring Filipino girlhood in Southeast San Diego during the aughts.
